I am a counselor at a Las Vegas High School. Attending an inner city school, students often have some challenges they face every day.
Some of the specific needs of inner-city students include:
Academic support: Inner-city students often come from schools that are underfunded and under-resourced. This can lead to academic gaps in key areas such as reading, writing, and math. I try to provide academic support to students by helping them to develop study skills, access tutoring resources, and create personalized academic plans.
Social-emotional support: Inner-city students often experience a high level of stress and trauma. This can lead to social-emotional challenges such as anxiety, depression, and behavioral problems. I provide social-emotional support to students by helping them to develop coping skills, manage their emotions, and build relationships with trusted adults.
