Speak is an incredible story of a young woman in the ninth grade who was raped at a party. She is alienated from her peers and is attempting to reconnect with her education and family but is unable to as she processes her trauma.
While it is incredibly uncomfortable to speak about rape and trauma, unfortunately our young people are still susceptible to that violence. For that reason, I hope to use Speak as a medium to provide voice to that ugly truth by having students listen to TED talks, guest speakers, and read the letters from the Stanford Rape Case victim (she remains unnamed) and Joe Biden who responds to her.
We will also explore art therapy and journaling as ways to work through trauma. My school doesn't have this beautiful and relevant book so I hope you will help me and my students! Thank you for reading!
