The current pandemic has affected so many people in so many ways. It has obviously had a major effect on education, first in prematurely shutting down schools in the spring, and now forcing many schools to implement virtual learning initiatives to keep students, teachers, and their communities safe from repeated exposure to this virus. This change in the learning environment comes with many additional costs, and it has put a lot of additional financial pressure on public schools.
Unfortunately, any unspent money in schools' budgets will go toward enhanced safety protocols, personal protective equipment, and cleaning supplies instead of much-needed educational equipment and supplies. Students' access to books that they need has decreased tremendously in this pandemic, and the budget for new books is simply not there at this time. Thus, any books that teachers can acquire without relying on their school's vanishing budget will make such a positive difference to our students.
The book "Just Mercy" is a powerful true story that will help my students learn more about the true meaning of justice. It will also open students' eyes to injustice, and help them to understand that justice is not always blind.
