I am a first year teacher in Charlotte, North Carolina at a brand new school! Teaching at a brand new school has its challenges, from combining students who are used to different school norms, to creating a new school community among teachers, parents, and students, to collecting supplies and tools to provide students with an equitable education. I had originally thought I wanted to teach an upper grade, so I started collecting novels around this time last year. However, I ended up teaching first grade! Although I have many books, not many of them are an appropriate reading level for first graders.
I envision using the books on this list for my students to enjoy while partner and individual reading, as well as whole class read-alouds!
In addition to leveled books, my wishlist includes tools to help my very active first graders! They love to move and need help to use that motion productively to help them learn. In addition, I've added some tools that will become part of our classroom "calm down" area. Young students have trouble understanding and dealing with their strong emotions, most of all anger.
