ELL students need to develop academic English language skills at the same time that they are learning content material. They are very eager to learn, but many lack the materials and resources to support their learning. In fact, most of our ELL's are students in need, as our population is 60% minority and 40% poverty. English vocabulary is difficult for ELLs. They know only a fraction of what native speakers know, and the failure to understand even a few words of a text can have negative effects on comprehension. In fact, research on vocabulary development shows that adequate reading comprehension depends on a person already knowing 90-95% of the words in a text. There are many strategies and techniques a teacher can use to improve a student's vocabulary. In fact, everything an ELL teacher does should revolve around vocabulary acquisition.
