There is no doubt that reading is essential to the development of middle school children. I teach in an impoverished community in New York City where most students cannot afford to purchase their own reading materials. While our school does provide teachers with classroom libraries, most of the books are outdated and in very poor condition. In addition, many of the titles in my classroom library do not appeal to my student population.
