Hello my name is Mrs. W, and I work in Las Vegas. My school is a tier 1 title 1 school with very little funding. The neighborhood is low income. All students receive free meals and many students deal with undesirable situations at home. Our school is challenged with many behavior problems and second language issues. The students are excited to learn, but they face language barriers. However, as a veteran kindergarten teacher I desire to make a safe and happy environment in my classroom.
My students don鈥檛 have many opportunities to have hands on experiences at home and I would like to instill the love of science in them.
The majority of my students are English Language Learners and struggle with both language and communication skills. During science centers my students can dive into hands on science exploration. At this time they get to enjoy all aspects of STEAM and apply it to their knowledge of other subjects such as reading and writing. The problem is that I am running out of supplies rapidly and do not have the resources within our budget to fund more. Ideally I would love to purchase more supplies for hands-on science exploration such as STEAM kits, and other materials to allow students to participate in all facets of STEAM.
My Project
The students at our school live in a low income community, and many of them are second language. Many students struggle in core subjects such as reading, writing and math. , in which students get to be immersed in science and STEAM exploration. They love it. The students retain so much when it comes to science and we have been able to use it to improve their skills in other subjects such as reading and writing.
