While most days we work on reading and math, there are some days that my students just need a "cool down" time. They might be overtired, upset about something that happened inside of their classroom, upset about something that happened at home, or they might just having a bad day because let's face it, we all have those days!
Whatever the issue might be, having a safe place where my kids can calm down and "cool off" helps them feel safe.
Having materials that help explore their senses such as stress balls, soft seating, calming bottles, sand timers, and other sensory items can help promote calmness and a sense of safety in the classroom. If students feel safe, they trust more. The safer they feel and the more they trust, the more they are able to learn.
I want my students to have the opportunity to calm down and restart their day when they are with me and I hope this project helps with this.
