I believe students should always feel comfortable in a classroom. My day is structured with whole group learning and small group learning. I love to use group carpets during both of these times.
Instead of having students in their seats while I am teaching a whole group lesson, I would prefer them to be on a community carpet where they are close to me. Having them close in proximity allows me to really see how my students are performing and learning. It is an excellent way to collect informal data for my kids.
I also love sitting on the floor and having small group time on the carpet. During these times, again, I am closer in proximity to my kids. I also love being able to have ample amount of space to work in-- especially during math when we are working with tens blocks, clocks, white boards, money, rulers/measurement tools, and other manipulatives that I believe are extremely important for students to use.
