Our school is fortunate to be located next to an urban canyon with a creek running through it. It is a perfect laboratory for our students. I have been involving my biology students in a number of activities to monitor the microorganisms of the creek to the determine the overall health of this aquatic ecosystem. This field equipment will help students engage in real scientific work in our local creek. The data we collect can be shared with the naturalists of our city's parks department who are working to restore the creek. Students will be able to see the results of their learning applied in the real world.
