Throughout the last few years, I have seen how flexible seating has helped my students become better students. They are free to choose the way they learn best/work with others. As teachers we realize that not all students, in fact very few learn best by sitting at a desk all day. Flexible seating also promotes team/partner work. They can sit on the sofa in a group therefore encouraging all children to be involved in the discussion. Sitting in bean bag chairs and on the carpet also fosters group discussion and work. Children learn how to work with others and to solve the problems that naturally come up when working with other children.
The students also become independent learners who are responsible for their work and completing it to the best of their ability. By creating children who are responsible, self motivated and dependable we make them successful not only in third grade but in the years to follow.
