This is a year long project based learning class available to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. The question students are asked: Is graffiti art? They answer this question by exploring the styles, mediums and materials used by street and graffiti artists. Through self-directed explorations these materials make a difference in my students learning because they feel tapped into a world that is largely unaccessible to them. We explore graffiti from all around the world and the messages that they send, we draw basic lettering- bubble, block and some wild style. Then we research the use of characters, learn to draw some of them and upon interest, some students come up with their own. Stenciling comes next and at this point students have discovered where/when/if graffiti is art. The culminating reflection is demonstrated by the student creating a final piece with acrylic marker on a canvas that is shown gallery style to the rest of the school. The class switches every trimester so many student get a chance to participate in this experience. The Molotow, Montana, Mr. Sketch markers, as well as the oil pastel set and squeezable High Flow set will be used by students to create a letter name piece, a character drawing, and final art piece. Each student will receive 12" x 16" canvas for their final art piece. Until then final pieces will be practiced and submitted on single sheets pulled from the Strathmore Visual Journals, both 12" x 9" and 8" x 5 1/2". The xacto knife and cutting boards will be used by students to make their stencils. The clear Krylon spray paint will be used to seal the acrylics on the final art pieces at the end of the trimester. The clear plastic storage containers will be used to keep markers organized.
