Research has shown that students are more successful in learning environments where they are comfortable and where they have choice. This project will create an appealing space that is more like those students would choose on their own-the coffee shop, living room, library. Other schools who have implemented this practice have seen improved motivation and punctuality. Students race to class to get their favorite seat.
Imagine walking in to a local coffee shop where young people go to chat, study, and connect. This is where young people today feel comfortable and learn best. You see the same scene repeated at university libraries where students study in groups all night. To be relevant to today's youth, school needs to become less constricting and more inspiring.
When students enter the classroom, they will have a choice of several learning areas. There will be two bar height tables with stools for students to choose, along with 2 low tables to use with ottomans and floor pillows where small groups of students can congregate. There will also be an assortment of directors chairs, dorm style soft chairs, floor pillows, and ottomans for students to sit on. This project will allow me to have lap boards and clip boards available to to those students who would rather work on their lap. Finally, I plan to have some traditional classroom seating for students who would rather work alone and for assessment purposes. This is the reason for the study carrels.
Of course, there will also be a charging station and spare headphones for students who need them. Since all students are not equally fortunate, I like to have extra equipment on hand for them to use.
