This past school year was my first year teaching and I realized there were many of my 8th grade math students who had trouble sitting still in their desk. There were a couple students who I gave the "privilege" of sitting in my teacher chair which can roll around and spin. Within a short amount of time, the productivity level of these students skyrocketed. Moving around while they were working helped them stay focused and do the best work I had seen them do all year.
Working in a low-income/high poverty middle school, the large majority of my students have experienced more tragedy than any one person should and the least I can do is to help set them up for success when they are at school. The chairs that spin and swivel will be beneficial for students who have trouble sitting still. The video rocker will help students feel more relaxed and able to focus on their work. The assorted tables will give students options of different places to sit and get their work done at a space that is best suited to their individual needs. The bench/ottoman set and stack stools will give them the freedom to sit anywhere and the low writing desk and carpet squares will let them work while sitting on the floor.
Last year I was able to see the impact I could make on students just by caring about them and advocating for them in the classroom. This led many students who had never passed a math STAAR test in their life to gain the confidence and the drive to pass their test. Seeing the looks and tears on the faces of the students who had passed for the first time ever made everything worth it.
