My first grade students who have experienced trauma will have the ability to focus on their learning as supported by a flexible seating arrangement in our classroom. Having multiple seating arrangements allows students the freedom to choose a setting in which they learn best. The students are not locked into one desk and chair. For example, the inflatable seat cushions provide the children with a choice to learn in any part of the classroom.
In addition, the mobility of seating arrangements is amenable to 21st-century collaboration. The surf lap desks can be moved easily from one place in the classroom to another place. Not only do they give students a comfortable place to sit, they also provide a writing space.
Non-traditional classroom furniture gives students who have experienced trauma the movement that they need. The active learning stools and the yoga balls are suited for active needs and assist students with their abilities to focus. An added plus is the development of core muscles, supporting health and good posture. My first grade students deserve a chance to thrive in a flexible and secure environment that is student-centered and not restrictive.
