My project involves purchasing a rug large enough to bring 36 students to one meeting area. It is my desire for each student to have his or her own spot to sit. McMillans (1986) define sense of community as "a feeling that members have of belonging, a feeling that members matter to one another and to the group, and a shared faith that members' needs will be met through their commitment to be together." Bringing students together in a common meeting area will be the catalyst for our close knit community. Social emotional learning is critical to shaping productive kind citizens. Students will work together as partners while on the carpet, turning and talking to their partner. In addition, bringing students down to the floor, much like a team huddle, allows the teacher to get close to all and focuses student's attention. Picture dinner table talk: feeling comfortable to share, taking turns and listening to their peers.
