Teaching about the Holocaust in today's world is imperative! Having real literature, with real characters that my students can connect with will allow me to teach the Holocaust to their hearts, not just their minds. When a book manages to stir emotion in the reader, a lasting lesson has been learned.
These books will be used by three classes, 66 students and will be part of a three month literacy/social studies unit about the Holocaust. My students will read, research and write about the facts and the people they encounter along the way. They will learn about the survivors, the heroes and the victims. After all is said and done, they will learn about the importance of speaking up and taking action when you witness unfairness, racism and cruelty.
