This is the first year our school is offering Peer PE. While most PE activities can be easily modified to be all inclusive, some additional activities are needed to meet the diverse needs of the students.
Students will special needs love the feeling of success, having a PE class geared toward their need and ability level will help them find that success. Students will learn and practice motor skills with the ring toss games. Outside of being active students will work on math skills when they add points they have earned in the bean bag toss. This game helps them control movement and understand how force works.
Since we only meet one class period a day and have to store our items outside of the gym, we need storage containers as well. Students will learn how to disassemble items to make them fit in the boxes, understand the importance of keeping like items together and the proper way to load a cart for transport.
When this class was announced, general education student interest exceeded expectations, they are a key component to making the project successful at our school. We are looking to expand the project to our middle school in the future.
