Year after year, my students IEP goals state: included punctuation and capitalization when writing or write a paragraph with a beginning middle and end. Their goals are driven by their needs. Students with special needs, especially speech and language needs struggle to clearly express themselves when writing.
Let's help our authors of tomorrow! These materials will help to build the skills that are required to write clearly! Using mentor texts help to develop the necessary skill set required when writing personal narratives, opinion/argumentative and informational pieces. Mentor texts are motivating and provide examples and visuals which are necessary for my children to succeed. Daily language practice will help in improving their editing skills. Our curriculum assumes that these mechanics of writing (spelling and punctuation) are mastered by 1st/2nd grade. This is not true for my students that recieve services through special education.
Please join in helping my students in becoming stronger writers. I believe in their ability to do so. The resources picked will help encourage the skills that so many of my students are lacking.
