Students need a safe and quiet place in the classroom when they are experiencing strong emotions. These chairs are comfortable and fit nicely in a cozy corner or a cardboard barrel for privacy. Our school uses a program called Second Step. This program uses lessons to teach our students about how emotions affect how you learn. It encourages students to communicate with each other to express feelings to build and repair relationships as well as solve problems. The program also teaches students how to calm down by breathing, counting, and using positive self talk. I have found that most students prefer to practice these strategies in a private space.
