Students need to feel safe, connected and engaged in the classroom. Students have struggled tremendously last year socially and emotionally, as well as academically. I will be using theatre as a way to help students connect with literacy and help them develop social skills as well as academic skills. My classroom focuses on the whole child, and incorporating social emotional learning to create a safe environment for interventions. This can also be done through distance learning through the theatre books. Students will have access to Readers Theatre and will be able to work on performance skills even through distance learning. We are also starting a theatre club at our school! We have also adapted it for distance learning through developing online shows. Students will be using technology and devices to create costumes, design sets and props. The heat press and hat press will help students with school connectedness and build relationships that instill a love for learning. They will be able to use critical thinking and build on prior knowledge from books we have read to then develop costumes and shirts for our Readers Theatre and theatrical performances. The theatre books will allow for students to learn a variety of improvisations games that will help create a classroom culture of positivity and fun.
