These books will help my students learn how to read and increase their reading skills while also creating more opportunities to have effective, age-appropriate conversations about race. I teach reading to all elementary-age students throughout the school day. These new books will provide my students with authentic, empowering texts written by authors and illustrators from a diverse range of cultures. It is important that the books my students read invite them to think more deeply about food, names, families, clothing, language, traditions, and communities. All of these books were chosen with my students in mind and to encourage their range of empathy and understanding. I intend to use these books to help my students make connections between their own experiences and the experiences of others and to strengthen their ability to make meaningful connections.
