My classroom is a home away from home. My students can come in and make themselves a cup of tea while they study together. I have designed a class where the learning is centered totally in the hands of the students. They are in charge of how much they want to learn. Thus they are also in charge of their grade at the end of each topic. I sit with each individual student at the end of each lesson to discuss what they have learned and evaluate whether or not they have earned the right to be exempt from the test. All of my students feel empowered by this design. They feel they have a say in what they get to learn and they have freedom in the time it takes them to learn the material.
