The materials and supplies that I am requesting for my students already have a "home." Most of the manipulatives I am requesting go with skills we have already covered this year. One is the base ten units, rods, flats, and cubes. These manipulatives specifically help students see the steps they are going through or need to go through in order to solve single and double digit subtraction and addition. The second is the rulers and measurement set, we have just wrapped up liquid and length measurement. The ruler is the tool we need to measure length the and the measure set would give my students a concrete understanding of cups, pints, quarts, and gallons. We have also learned about time and temperature both of which are much easier explained and understood when the tools used to practice this skill are in the students hands and not just the teachers. Skills we have not covered yet are fractions, money, and geometric shapes. Fraction circles will allow my students to compare uncommon denominators. Having the money, and the pouches to store them in for each student will put the money in the students hand to familiarize themselves with the coins and practice independently and participate in whole group money activities. Lastly the geometric shapes will again be put in the students hands. They have to learn how many faces, vertices, edges and points each shape has.
My students are strong in math, but I want to help them to be stronger by giving them manipulatives to connect what their brains know and what their hands hold. By implementing the manipulatives into math I hope they will help to improve the students confidence in themselves.
