I started this project to ensure my students have the greatest opportunity to be in a classroom setting that is most conducive to a 1st graders' learning. Research shows that students are more likely to participate in class discussions in a classroom with collaborative group seating like in a flexible seating classroom than in a traditional setting. A flexible seating classroom allows students a variety of seating options (yoga balls, stools, cushions, pillows, chairs, couches, etc.).
The ability to wiggle, wobble, and move increases the oxygen to the brain which keeps minds more alert and focused. Additionally, having the opportunity to select their own seat in a flexible seating classroom provides students the ability to become independent thinkers and decision makers. Students will learn to practice discipline and self control in the flexible seating classroom. Most importantly, as their teacher I will be preparing students to be great thinkers and decision makers of the future.
