My students prove that it is never too late to learn. They come from countries like the Dominican Republic and Mexico, where many of them did not receive formal education. As newcomers to the country, they worked harder than typical high school students in order to prove that they could go to college at the same time as their native English speaking peers.
This year our first graduating class of seniors will leave the bilingual halls of our school to enter colleges big and small, where people will not know the struggles--academic, emotional, and otherwise--they have faced as immigrants. I want all of my students to hold their heads high and know that they have received an education that allows them to provide for their families, build a stronger and more diverse U.S., and prove that hard work and intelligence really do go hand in hand.
