I teach Spanish in an urban high school in California. The majority of my students are from low socio-economic neighborhoods. Although many of them have low reading and writing skills, many have strong visual talents and demonstrate pride in their art. I would like to tap into these strengths in order to help make their language acquisition skills more successful. Many students who are learning a second language can be supported in this undertaking when they can associate a new word with an image. This is stronger when the student is able to compare an image with one鈥檚 own life experience - to identify oneself to the image and its contents and with all that is represented by it.
