Research shows that playing chess raises the IQ of those that play. Chess exercises both sides of the brain. Chess competition builds the skills of thinking ahead, thinking creatively, concentrating, and solving problems. As former child chess champion, I was able to use these skills gained from playing chess through my childhood, teen, and now adult years. I want my students to be able to plan ahead and reflect on the potential consequences of their decisions. Chess can help them do that.
Our Chess Club is an after school event for beginners of Chess. There is no charge to these children and another teacher and I willingly teach these children the compassion and love for chess.
Help us provide these basic chess skills to 30-50 under-privileged 3rd to 5th grade children through this after-school chess club. With your help, we can provide these children the opportunity to discover their champion inside, as well as avoid problems out of school.
With your funding, this project will help us provide enough chess sets for 30 students. But this is just the beginning. Once we鈥檝e got the all-boys club operating successfully, I plan to open up an all-girls chess club, also after school.
Beside the benefits listed earlier, the chess club will give some students something social to do outside of school hours. It will provide an option for those who aren't currently involved in sports or music or other after school groups. It may even save their lives.
