I am the Math Coach at a Title 1 public elementary school in Astoria, New York. Unlike a traditional classroom teacher, I travel from classroom to classroom to spread my knowledge and love of mathematics to all 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade students (and some 1st and 2nd Graders also!), and to support our classroom teachers in advancing our high-quality mathematics program.
The Dell Inspiron laptop has expanded memory, faster processor and longer battery life to enable me make the most of my time with students on learning math concepts, reinforcing math skills, and connecting concept with every-day application. My students come to school always eager and ready to learn, but they are deprived of learning opportunities because a portion of our time together is spent waiting for my outdated and temperamental DOE-issued laptop to slowly upload lessons, presentations and resources. They deserve to reap the full benefit of the mathematics program we have carefully developed, and not have their learning be hampered by ineffective technology.
Whether they are in the school's general education, dual language, or gifted and talented program, my students are under pressure to excel in their studies. I maximize their learning by engaging them, making lessons fun and relevant, and collaborating with classroom teachers. My ultimate goal as Math Coach is to raise my students' confidence and comfort levels with respect to math, and to enable them to exceed their own expectations.
