Science is a big deal for 2nd graders. Using Common Core guidelines, I integrate science into both reading and writing. Learning is made possible through great non-fiction readers that have grade-level text and colorful illustrations and diagrams.
One of the projects that we do each year is make Animal Dioramas. Understanding animals and their habitats is key to a great diorama and an informative report. Additionally, we learn and study about landforms all around the world - what they are, how they are formed, where they are located. Finally, we study matter -- liquids, solids, and gases. Investigating how an object can be disassembled and reshaped into a new object with a different function can be accomplished in a creative way using LEGO bricks.
