In the past two years, our school has seen an influx of newcomer students from a variety of countries including Afghanistan, Guatemala, Yemen, and Mexico. These students come with a wide range of excellent skills, but most are just starting to develop their English reading abilities. When these students come to our school they are placed in the grades that are developmentally appropriate for their age, however, they do not always have the books they need at their level to develop their reading skills.
We need to meet our newcomer students where they are in their reading so that they can begin to develop their reading and writing skills. Our library books reflect a 3rd-grade reading range, which does not support many of our newcomers' reading levels. We must provide them with the resources they deserve so that they do not fall between the cracks and get passed on to the next grade not knowing how to read.
These books will support our newcomers where they are and make them feel like a part of our classroom community.
