My students will be set up to succeed rather than becoming frustrated by using these hands-on materials. All of the materials requested will be used in small groups to assist in differentiating instruction toward the needs of individual students including English Language Learners, Multi-Level Students and Special Education Students.
These hands-on activities will accommodate students with a variety of learning styles and will develop important foundational skills necessary for success in all academic tasks.
The leveled books will be available on a daily basis and students will be aware of their level so they could choose a book that will be comprehensible. These, and the Readers' Theater script box, will help to increase their vocabulary and fluency. I will set up 2 listening centers due to the large number of students I have in my class (29) using the ready-to-go listening center along with the portable cd player to go along with the headphones and jack I already have. The audio books will expose students to text that is beyond their reading ability but that challenges their vocabulary and comprehension. Also, struggling readers aren't stuck with boring content, and they have the chance to learn to love literature.
During our ELA block, I would like to include a writing center. In that center, I would like use Reading & Writing Skills Folder Game Libraries and Writing Super Sentences to expand the students' writing, increase vocabulary and get their creative juices going.
The Math materials, such as the Self-Checking Problem Solving Match-Ups, Place Value Equivalency Puzzles and Hands-On Regrouping Kit - Addition, will be used to set up Math centers. Students will be able to explore, reason and justify by using concrete items to gain a deeper conceptual understanding and ultimately enjoyment of math.
