The new normal for elementary specialists is to teach 2 classes at a time in order to fulfill all of the classroom teachers' preps in one day. When the classrooms were stocked with instruments, the intention was to have between 15 and 25 students at a time. The class doubling has created class sizes between 28 - 45 causing the students to take turns, diminishing the musical experience.
Expanding the classroom arsenal of musical instruments by 10 ukuleles would allow up to 40% more instrument contact time for students. As much as I love to talk about music, the real experience for the student comes from playing a real instrument on their own. The ukulele seems like a perfect candidate to expand on our Pacific Islander literature as well as first exposure for our Hispanic population to the very successful Mariachi elective at our feeder middle school.
