My seniors in English 12 are burnt-out on school after the modifications to learning the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Most have jobs and are more focused on their life at home instead of finishing their high school education.
This project will turn my classroom into a wellness caf茅 for reading and writing and help motivate students to attend class, on time, and be present and focused for learning. By providing exercise balls as available alternatives for chairs, students will engage their bodies and their brains while in class.
Having a hot drinks bar with herbal teas available will also help students, especially during the 7:30 am classes to recharge and focus. D茅cor, including paper lanterns, led lights, and fake ivy will help the bland, white manufactured building that houses our classroom transform into a space with atmosphere that is welcoming and relaxing for students.
In my English and Debate classes, speaking, listening and small group collaboration are an essential part of the skills we are building. A set of UnLock games will allow for collaborative critical thinking activities that are also fun to be used in conjunction with small group learning. The pronoun buttons will be made available for use by any student - including those who have come out as transgender during this school year.
