My school is beginning literacy groups in order to help students achieve academic growth in all areas. I will have my AVID students for these groups and would love for them to have the opportunity to read Maya Angelou's I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. This novel is of high interest to my students because of the time period that it takes place in and because of the author herself. The core of what AVID stands for is epitomized by Maya Angelou's life. I feel by reading this book my students will have a greater understanding of why academics is so important and how it could help them in their future.
