I am the PBIS Coordinator and Dean at a public school in a low income, high need, special education school in Brooklyn, NY. The students that I serve include students with autism, cerebral palsy, down syndrome, and other developmental disabilities. All of my students have their own unique personalities and needs. Many students are nonverbal or have minimal verbal skills. Many of my students are being taught to use alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) to express themselves and communicate with their peers. Many also have limited motor control. The school has five sites across Brooklyn.
