Games, such as chess, can help students build self-confidence, problem solve, and increase their attention span and stamina in the classroom. Currently, we have one chess board a teacher brought for her students to use. Our students come from lower income families and they do not have many opportunities to learn complex games. Not only are we wanting to teach our students how to play chess and love the game, we would also like to bring in guest speakers/teachers and take a trip to the World Chess Hall of Fame in St. Louis, Missouri. We are a bilingual Title I school in Collinsville, Illinois, just outside of St. Louis, Missouri. Title I schools receive extra funding to help bridge the gap between more affluent schools and lower socioeconomic schools.
Another teacher and I are trying to get a chess club started at our school. Chess is proven to help build stamina, increase problem solving skills, develop self-confidence, and learn to pay attention to details. Watching students learn to play with the board she brought gave us the idea.
