At my school, staff and administration have come together to build our own after school program in Fort Worth, Texas. All of the clubs, including our gardening club, have been created for students to enrich their lives and, perhaps, expose them to skills and experiences that not only "peak their interest," but give them a new perspective on taking care of themselves. My kids come from neighborhoods where it's difficult to find home grown fresh fruit and vegetables. On the first day, I brought in a tomato plant with tomatoes, and many of them had never tried a vegetable off of the vine before. I was surprised at how excited they were, and how intrigued by a simple cherry tomato. These are elementary school children with boundless energy and enthusiasm. A vegetable garden is something alive, which produces tangible and tasty results. On the first day of gardening, I brought in a tomato plant with tomatoes, and many of them had never tried a vegetable off of the vine before. In this day and age, in our society of processed food and overweight children, I believe it is vital for our current, and future, generations to understand where their food comes from. Our gardening club can help them begin to understand the value of fresh, home grown fruits and vegetables as those relate to nutrition, and economics. When possible, having a vegetable garden is not only deeply satisfying, it is better for our bodies and our pocketbooks. These materials will be used to create a space where my students can learn how to work as a team to grow a garden, and then take that food to make something nutritious and delicious!
