Most of my students use speech generative devices to communicate. They are learning quickly, but they need books to help them learn and practice new words. Fiction and non-fiction books provide natural opportunities for students to practice vocabulary words and language skills such as answering questions and retelling narratives.
We need books to build a classroom library like, In the Tall, Tall Grass, Family Huddle, and If You Decide To Go To The Moon, to name a few. These books will foster a love for literacy and support learning. These books will be used daily to teach and practice language concepts and speech sounds. I love integrating literacy into speech therapy, but it can be difficult to find the right books for each skill at local libraries. Having our own books would also allow for me to alter and adapt them using communication symbols so that they are appropriate for all of my students.
