What makes average readers into avid readers? Choice. And choice means lots of variety: picture books, chapter books, graphic novels, biographies of inspiring people, non-fiction books on exciting topics, like volcanoes or the Titanic.
Some of my students arrived in our district already reading at third or fourth grade level in their native Spanish: they need grade level materials that engage them, and I want to give them that!
Spanish-language materials are not always readily available through my usual book distributor, and they don't always have the selection of popular titles and topics my students crave. These books will allow my Spanish readers choices that span grade levels and genres, and allow them to maintain fluency in their native language while conquering the challenge of learning a new one.
