One of my goals each year as a teacher is to create a classroom community where students feel safe and work to encourage one another. The first part of our project is reading and having students make a connection between the reading and themselves - "text to self". My students will be reading the book, "Wonder" and will work together to highlight the things that make them a "Wonder". We will be exploring the book as a group and engage in discussions about things that frustrate them and why and how to keep things in perspective - trying to appreciate the things they do well and the what they have in their lives, rather than the things they don't. The second part of our project is to have students connect their reading to those around them - "text to world". The point of this will be to look beyond themselves and see how the message in the story relates to the world around them, specifically, our school community. Lastly, we'll be working to make a "text to text" connection. As a 5th Grade classroom community, we'll be working with our school librarian to find books to share with others. The books will share a message similar to "Wonder", allowing students to understand what it might be like to walk in others' shoes and how to experience the world with an increased sense of empathy and openness.
