Access to a high-quality document camera will allow my students to view and workshop each other's work. This is especially helpful in writing and in math. At my past school, I would often project student writing on the board using a document camera. My students examined this writing, providing constructive feedback and compliments to the writer. Through this experience, students strengthened their writing skills and their understanding of the writing process. I also used a document camera to project student work in math. After viewing the work, students discussed the strategy this classmate used to solve the problem. With the help of our document camera, students viewed lots of work samples with ease, and grew to understand that mathematicians use many different strategies when solving problems.
A document camera not only helps strengthen academic skills, but also promotes engagement, risk-taking and perseverance. Students love sharing their work with others! My hope is that my students will share not only published, "perfect" work, but also works-in-progress that contain mistakes. I want my students to recognize mistakes as opportunities for growth, and learn to use peer feedback and collaborative problem solving to address these mistakes. This process requires students to take risks, and helps them develop a growth mindset about their learning. With the help of a document camera, my students will be able to view, share, and discuss their work with their learning community!
