Every year, my students study the history of China and they often have trouble personally connecting to the material. I like to use personal stories to help my students connect to material that seems unattainable or lofty. I am asking for 100 copies the Red Scarf Girl to allow my students to read individually at their own pace and connect to material that previously seemed unrelated to their own lives. Ji-li Jiang, the author of "Red Scarf Girl", was the same age as my students during the darkest point of her family's journey, which will more easily allow them to connect to the material.
The first step in teaching tolerance, acceptance, and empathy is providing a way for my students to connect with personal stories of people from different cultures and time periods. The basis of tolerance is understanding, and "Red Scarf Girl: A Memoir of the Cultural Revolution" will allow my students to better understand communism as a whole and more specifically how the Cultural Revolution affected individual families.
