I teach because I want to empower young scholars to make a positive change for themselves and their community. I have come to realize that my upbringing has revealed to me the injustices brought on by institutionalized structures designed to oppress people with less than fortunate circumstances. This is my call to action - to remove barriers to success and contribution that others face that I also did. In order to provide opportunities to students that were not accessible to me. Every person we lose from the ranks of healthy and educated becomes a responsibility for the institutions that operate our communities. There is more need than there is human capital. Education is a way to tilt this balance towards the other direction and the beautiful young people of the Oakland community should be lifted up and celebrated for their natural strengths of diversity and community values.
