My seniors have an INCREDIBLE opportunity this semester to read a life-changing memoir: "Heavy" by Kiese Laymon. Even more incredible? The author has graciously agreed to do some Zoom talks with them!!! I am beyond thrilled to share this experience with my kids, but I need your help raising money for the book copies.
Every kid has to have their own copy because of the pandemic. We can't share a class set like the old days because we're at home. In a way, it's nice that the kids get to keep one, but it's too bad we only get to see each other online. Regardless, they GET TO READ "HEAVY"!!! AND TALK TO THE AUTHOR!
As seniors, this is the perfect time to dive into memoir -- both reading and writing. They'll also use Laymon's book to address themes of systemic oppression, equity in education, self-image, and tons more. After preparing for and participating in the Zoom author talks, they'll build their own visual and written memoirs, and they will perform their own monologue. All thanks to YOUR HELP!
