I am requesting ten books in sets of six that will be used with my students during guided reading instruction. Reading Recovery Council of North America has reviewed these titles and recognized them to have the following:
A sufficient amount of text to engage children in problem solving behaviors; represent ethnic, cultural, and language diversity; story lines that are of interest; good-quality illustrations; constructed using good-quality materials; and most importantly support strategic literacy development. Although my students are working on foundational skills, the high quality of the texts will create an engaging and authentic literacy experience. During small group instruction, I will use each book for two to three days where we will learn concepts of print, letters sound correspondence, and guided writing skills. The students will then put the books in their individual book boxes, so they can practice and enjoy the books over and over. Repeated readings at a students' instructional level is crucial when becoming a fluent reader.
