Everyone deserves the chance to learn. My students have severe emotional and behavioral challenges. We have started a new program that is geared toward working with both social and emotional needs as well as academic needs.
Prior to the implementation of this program, my students were shipped out to another town and placed in a hospital until they were deemed "better". In the meantime, they missed out on important learning skills and found themselves behind in their academic work and frustrated. Naturally, they began to act out.
Our district saw the importance of creating a behavior support program for the middle and high school level.
My paraprofessional and I took the challenge with arms wide open. We have discovered the greatest challenge is meeting the multilevel, wide variety of subject matter with hands on activities. What little we have scraped together is proving powerful.
Items such as numerical dice, alphabet dice, globes, and skeleton models, provide hands on learning opportunities for the students to understand math, English, science, and social studies concepts. Some of the items (fidget and squish balls) give the students with ADHD and Autism a resource to help control behavior and focus on learning concepts. The items in this project would highly enhance the students' level of learning while helping to show teamwork and proper social skills. I thank you in advance for your support and want to show the world that all kids can learn.
