Flexible seating options in the classroom will help to create an atmosphere of choice, where the learners are able to choose the seating option that helps them be more effective students. I would love to have several different seating options to choose from, such as shorter desks with pillows to sit on, higher desks where the students can stand, and wobble chairs that help my students to wiggle as they learn. Studies show that most students benefit from learning through movement.
These seating options allow for maximum movement through rocking/wobbling, which increases blood flow to the brain, without compromising classroom space. As a school, we are currently transitioning our students from a set block schedule to a "must do, may do" environment where the students get a checklist and complete the assignments at their pace and in the order they choose. By having both flexible seating and a flexible work schedule, my students are tasked with the responsibility to make responsible choices on their own. They will be held to high standards and expected to make comfortable yet productive choices. It is my hope that this freedom will help to build more responsible citizens of the future.
