Having witnessed the most reluctant readers pick up a graphic novel and suddenly find themselves captivated by a series or genre while building proficiency and confidence I am a true believer in the multi-tasking superhero like powers of the graphic novel format for middle grade students struggling to build literacy skills.
Graphic novels meet each reader where they live: in a place of pure nonjudgemental enjoyment. They afford students, who have grown distrustful of traditional chapter books or who might feel self conscious around peers due to internalized struggles, an entry point that allows them to retain their social swagger while continuing on a path of growth as readers. Suddenly students who dreaded SSR time are avidly reading and discussing plot twists and character motivation with their peers. Literacy bliss. I am asking for copies of 30 different graphic novels including March: Book Three, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur Vol. 1, and In Real Life.
