I use Will Schid's "World Music Drumming" curriculum. Not only does it meet National Standards, but it also aims to teach drumming technique, rhythm, and African culture and history while building communication, teamwork, and respect for others in the classroom. Some examples of this include: understanding the importance of leaving spaces (silence) for others to drum (speak) in an ensemble, Improvising new patterns that are complementary to those played by other students, Listening actively and critically to various styles of music, discussing how traditional drumming may be the same or different from contemporary styles in various cultures, and understanding how music reflects similar cultural themes and patterns found in art, dance, literature, and social patterns of the cultures studied.
A new set of tubanos and a djembe drum will not only sound more authentic, but will last for several years and potentially have a positive impact on the lives and perspective of every student at my school.
